OUR WORK

Patients Canada is committed to ensuring we understand what’s important to patients in Canada, and bring these concerns forward to realize meaningful change. Some recent highlights of our work include:

Contributing to the National Dialogue on Healthcare

  • Patients Canada had a voice in the Health Accord that was signed between Ottawa and the Provinces in 2017. Based on patient survey responses, we advocated for more assistance with mental health and home care services. The Health Accord means that the federal government will provide $11.5 billion over 10 years to the provinces to invest in mental health and home care
  • Patients Canada appeared before the task force looking into sexual harassment of providers and the role of the professional college, and presented recommendations for an improved system with greater transparency and better discipline
  • Representatives from Patients Canada participated in a roundtable discussion at the request of then Federal Health Minister, Jane Philpott
  • Presented results of a patient survey which addressed the most important health issues facing Canadians to the Health Ministers across Canada at the annual Health Ministers meeting
  • We conducted a survey to capture patient input on the major healthcare issues surrounding the 2018 provincial election in Ontario
  • Patients Canada attends and presents at a number of patient and caregiver conferences around Canada, and brings forward the patient perspective on a wide range of healthcare issues and topics. For a list of conference we have attended click here.

Building connections between patients and the healthcare system

  • Patients Canada hosted the inaugural town hall of newly appointed Patient Ombudsman, Christine Elliott
  • Since 2010, Patients Canada, with support from the Ontario Medical Association, has publicly acknowledged more than 30 providers in diverse communities across Ontario with the Patients Choice Awards. This prestigious award is a celebration of health care providers who exemplify a commitment to providing the quality of care that patients value. The value of strong patient-provider relationships is at the core of this initiative. Patients submit narrative-based nominations that speak to why their family doctor or specialist patient-centred care, and another group of patients determine the winners. Interested in learning more?
